Buttermilk Syrup

Buttermilk Syrup from our favorite breakfast restaurant back home. The restaurant is gone but we still make the syrup!

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup sugar

  2. ½ cup unsalted butter

    1 stick

  3. ¾ cup buttermilk

  4. ½ teaspoon baking soda

  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

  1. Cook the butter and sugar over medium low heat until they are dark golden brown.

Stir often using a wooden spoon

  2. Remove from heat and let cool for 2 minutes. Then add the buttermilk and store vigorously.

It will start to boil so stir enough that it does not separate. If it does separate, bring to boil again over stove to dissolve any solids, then remove from heat again.

  3. Once combined, whisk in baking soda and vanilla.

It will foam a lot when mixing in these ingredients, so make sure the pot is big enough or transfer to a large bowl.

  4. Let sit until it is no longer super foamy, then transfer to a squeeze bottle for easy serving.

Best served warm!
